The word ruby comes from ruber, Latin for red. Many people associate its brilliant crimson colors with passion and love, making ruby an ideal choice for an engagement ring. Ruby is the red variety of the corundum mineral species, while all other colors of corundum are called sapphire. Natural ruby is one of four “precious” gemstones (including diamond, emerald and sapphire) known its rarity, monetary value, and hardness (second only to diamond).

Traces of chromium give this red variety of the mineral corundum its rich color. Long valued by humans of many cultures. In ancient Sanskrit, ruby was called ratnaraj, or “king of precious stones.”

The sunset ruby is the world's most expensive ruby, most expensive colored gemstone, and the most expensive gemstone other than a diamond. It is named after a poem of the same name, written by the 13th-century Sufi poet Rumi.

Ruby is the traditional birthstone for July and has always been a talisman of passion, protection and prosperity. It symbolizes the sun, and its glowing hue suggests an inextinguishable flame within the stone.
