Look: The ladies behind Friends with Benefits

Meet Renee and Mia, shop owners of Friends with Benefits in Vancouver, BC.

Friends with Benefits is a community space for special events, workshops and open for shopping on Saturdays.

How did you guys become friends?

We met almost ten years ago at the Royal Unicorn probably dancing to Just What I Needed by the Cars.

How did Friends with Benefits start and what the motive behind it?

Friends with Benefits originally started with the intention to create a space where our friends could showcase their work in a fun, non-pretentious environment. The motivation behind it will always be to support a community of artists and friends through a space where people starting out will have somewhere to show what they do. We hope that nurturing this kind of community space will encourage people to create, get something meaningful off the ground and actually make some money doing it.

What is it like owning a business? How do you stay sane?

A lot of the time it doesn’t really feel like we own a business, we have a pretty mellow attitude about it! It feels good to work with someone who is on the same level as you and we definitely thrive off each others energy and laugh a lot… but I don’t think we are necessarily sane 98% of the time.

Favourite secret spot in the city?

R- Obsessed with the Japanese food at Carp (found next to the weirdest but most wonderful mall in Vancouver, Kingsgate!). If you have a car and want to get out of the city, Brunswick Beach in the Summer is total paradise!

M- My backyard and of course Sweet Boy Cream Puffs when Chams had a permanent location.

What’s your go to piece of jewelry for every day?

R- I feel lucky to have a jewellery-obsessed Mother. She’s passed on some real gems I wear constantly like a vintage Gucci watch with interchangeable coloured face plates!

M- I’m pretty simple when it comes to jewellery, I have a ring by Noon Jewellery that I wear everyday and then my Foe & Dear gold cuff!
